Fish Pond

Fish pond

  • Please do not deposit any fish from your own pond or elsewhere into the Fishpond -  this requires permission and a health check from the Environment Agency and you may be prosecuted if you move fish into inland waters without this.

  • We are following the advice of the Environment Agency in monitoring water quality. If you do witness any fish in distress or evidence of fish mortalities, please photograph, noting the time and date of the incident and send in to the Parish Clerk.
  • Barton Fishpond – update 13 August 2025
Barton PC have received some comments recently about the fishpond – its water quality and aeration.
The 'big picture' is that until we get some rain and some water in the Brook we won't be able to pump any into the pond to top it up. So we're making the best of the situation meantime.
As a very simple 'green plant' the algae in the pond that are causing the green colouration in the water DO photosynthesise and produce oxygen during the day which helps contribute to the levels of dissolved oxygen that the fish need.
However after dark the algae takes oxygen from the water to use in its metabolism and dissolved O2 levels decrease overnight. The most important time for the aerator to run is therefore in the early morning to increase dissolved O2 levels when they are at their lowest. Currently the aerator is set to run in the morning from 5.00 until 8.00 a.m.

The paddle aerator also moves surface water across the pond which helps with mixing the water, especially when there is little or no wind. As well as operating in the morning it's set to run in the evenings from 7.00 to 9.00 p.m.

For a coarse fishery dissolved oxygen levels should not drop below 6 mg/L. The measurement taken yesterday evening (12/08/25) was 12.5 mg/L so currently we are doing OK.

The smell that people may be noticing is mainly because as the pond water level is lower than normal this exposes some of the silt in the reeded areas and this will give off an odour. This should go when the water level recovers.
We continue to monitor the situation and meantime hope for some rain after this hot spell

In addition to our regular Bailiffs, we also have a Fishpond Working Party - Adam Spurrier, Giles Bennett, Daniel Boulter and Craig - clearing the pond of invasive weeds, ivy and keeping the pegs clear.  Please get in touch if you are interested in joining.

We are always seeking volunteers to support the initiative that provides training for young anglers in rod craft, how to handle fish etc. If you have the relevant experience and you are interested in this fun opportunity, contact John.Anderson.FISH.2013@gmail.com. You will have to be DBS checked.
